Student Loan Debt Relief Options for Borrowers with Disabilities

Online Application

Borrowers with severe permanent disabilities who are unable to repay their Canada Student Loans may be eligible to have their debt cancelled through the Severe Permanent Disability Benefit.

To apply online, visit the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) website and click on "Apply for Severe Permanent Disability Benefit". You will need to provide your Social Insurance Number (SIN) and other personal information.

Mail-In Application

If you prefer, you can also apply by mail. To do so, download and complete the Repayment Assistance Plan Application (PDF format) and the medical report (PDF format). Mail the completed forms to:

National Student Loans Service Centre
Tower B, 700 Gloucester Street
Ottawa, ON K1K 4K8

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Severe Permanent Disability Benefit, you must have a severe permanent disability that prevents you from performing the daily activities necessary to participate in substantially gainful employment.

To determine your eligibility, a medical professional will need to complete a medical report that confirms your disability. The medical report must be submitted with your application.

Benefits

If your application for the Severe Permanent Disability Benefit is approved, your student loan debt will be cancelled. This means that you will no longer have to make any payments on your student loans.

In addition to the Severe Permanent Disability Benefit, there is also a Repayment Assistance Plan for Borrowers with Disabilities (RAP-D). This program can provide reduced payments or no payments at all on your student loans, depending on your income and disability.

How to Apply for RAP-D

To apply for RAP-D, you can either apply online through the NSLSC website or by mail. To apply online, click on "Apply for Repayment Assistance Plan for Borrowers with Disabilities" and follow the instructions. To apply by mail, download and complete the Repayment Assistance Plan Application (PDF format) and mail it to the address above.

Benefits of RAP-D

RAP-D can provide you with a number of benefits, including:

  • Reduced payments on your student loans
  • No payments at all on your student loans, if you qualify
  • Interest-free status on your student loans
  • Protection from collection actions
