Kenya's Munyao and Jepchirchir Triumph in London Marathon

Munyao Defeats Bekele, Jepchirchir Sets Women's Record

Kenya Dominates London Marathon with Historic Victories

Kenya's Alexander Munyao and Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir emerged victorious in the 2024 London Marathon, showcasing the nation's dominance in the prestigious event. Munyao triumphed in the men's elite race, while Jepchirchir shattered records in the women's category.

Munyao crossed the finish line in an impressive time of 2:04:01, beating the legendary Kenenisa Bekele into second place. Bekele, who has won the London Marathon three times in the past, finished 41 seconds behind the Kenyan upstart. Local favorite Emile Cairess finished in third place, completing the podium.

Jepchirchir, the reigning Olympic marathon champion, made history by setting a new women's-only world record. She crossed the line in 2:16:16, becoming the first woman to break the 2:17 barrier in a women's-only race. Her compatriot, Alexander Munyao, also claimed victory in the men's race, finishing with a time of 2:04:00.

Munyao and Jepchirchir's victories continue Kenya's proud tradition in the London Marathon. The East African nation has now produced 11 men's and 10 women's champions since the race's inception in 1981.
